Randy Orton def. U.S. Champion Antonio Cesaro in a Beat the Clock Challenge Match

PHOTOS | VIDEO
U.S. Champion Antonio Cesaro has cemented himself as a Superstar to watch out for in the Royal Rumble Match, but his first step toward the mad melee didn’t exactly go off without a hitch. Despite his best efforts, the Herculean champion fell victim to Randy Orton in a Beat the Clock Challenge that will allow the Superstar who sets the fastest time in victory to pick his entry number in the Royal Rumble Match.
The Viper came into the contest with some scouting under his belt already, having faced Cesaro on WWE Main Event last week in a contest that was interrupted by The Shield. But the arrogant U.S. Champion clearly did his homework as well, attempting to bully Orton into fatigue right off the bat. Cesaro seemed to have victory in hand after striking Orton with a very European uppercut that left Orton out on his feet, but it turned out The Viper was only playing possum. While Cesaro preoccupied himself with the clock, Orton took his time to regain his bearings after the jaw-rattling attack, finally letting loose with an RKO on a distracted Cesaro to set the Beat the Clock pace at 11:36.

Randy Orton & WWE Tag Team Champions Team Hell No def. Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett & Team Rhodes Scholars in a Six-Man Tag Match

(WATCH | PHOTOS)
Two days after Randy Orton was attacked by The Shield during his match against U.S. Champion Antonio Cesaro on WWE Main Event, The Viper joined forces with Team Hell No to take on Wade Barrett & Team Rhodes Scholars on SmackDown.
With their WWE Tag Team Title Match at Royal Rumble looming, there was certainly bad blood between Team Hell No and Team Rhodes Scholars, made worse by Damien Sandow & Cody Rhodes making an unwelcome appearance Monday night during the champions’ therapy session with Dr. Shelby.
Chaotic action was par for the course in the six-man tag bout from the start. And when Rhodes hit Cross Rhodes on WWE’s Apex Predator, the end seemed near. But after Kane was able to break-up the three-count, Orton rallied. The Viper coiled, unleashing a ring-shaking RKO to Sandow to send Orton & Team Hell No on to a huge victory.
After their win, Orton found himself in the middle of a (not-so-voluntary) group hug with Kane & Daniel Bryan — all part of Team Hell No’s road to recovery.

 Randy Orton Vs. Wade Barrett

PHOTOS | VIDEO

In his biggest battle yet as Wade Barrett clashed with his longtime rival Randy Orton on Raw’s 20th anniversary and, to the shock of the WWE Universe, scored a ruthless win over a Superstar who’s been not only a nine-time World Champion but also Barrett’s own persistent, personal foil through the years. Orton drew on his pas t clashes with the Englishman for their bout in Houston’s Toyota Center, but Barrett had learned a thing or two as well in his past collisions with The Apex Predator. A strong opening sequence from Orton put the bout squarely in his control, but “The Prince,” as Barrett refers to himself on Twitter, showed why perseverance is essential to victory.

Barrett absorbed Orton’s blows and waited the contest out, choosing his moments carefully as he slowly, surgically reclaimed the momentum from The Apex Predator. Barrett ensnared Orton in the ropes and locked his foe in submission holds to slow Orton down. After a last-minute attempt at a rally from Orton, Barrett evaded the RKO and finally put The Viper down with a thunderous Bull Hammer to Orton’s cranium, notching the three-count and ensuring The Barrett Barrage will, indeed, live on.

Randy Orton def. Antonio Cesaro via Disqualification

(WATCH | PHOTOS)
Prior to his contest against The Viper, United States Champion Antonio Cesaro declared his intentions of entering — and winning — the Royal Rumble Match on Jan. 27. Then in a match set up by Booker T at the top of the show, WWE’s Apex Predator took on The Swiss Superman for the first time in a one-on-one battle.

Orton matched Cesaro’s punishing physicality blow for blow, creating a hard-fought showdown from start to finish.  When The Viper appeared ready to strike with an RKO, though, The Shield suddenly descended into the ring to disrupt the action. The referee called the bout and awarded a disqualification victory to WWE’s Apex Predator, but the rogue trio continued their chaotic assault, planting the nine-time World Champion with a ring-shaking Three-Man Powerbomb.

Randy Orton def. Heath Slater

PHOTOS

Heath Slater’s 3MB may be hard at work in the studio, but it was Randy Orton who racked up the hits against the band’s frontman Heath Slater in the Tampa Bay Times Forum. Slater made a name for himself in 2012 as a Superstar who wasn’t afraid to take on some of WWE’s Legends, but Slater felt the wrath of the original Legend Killer in Florida as Orton attacked him early and often in the short, physical contest. Slater took it to Orton as best he could by targeting the former WWE Champion’s recently separated shoulder, but The Viper would not be denied in his unmanning of Slater. Toughing it out through Slater’s strategy, The Apex Predator shook off the red-haired rocker’s offense (and the interference of 3MB) before lashing out with an RKO to bring Slater’s evening to an unceremonious end. No encores necessary.

Randy Orton & Sheamus def. Big Show & Antonio Cesaro

(WATCH | PHOTOS)
On the same week that saw United States Champion Antonio Cesaro defeat both WWE Hall of Famer Sergeant Slaughter on Raw and former World Heavyweight Champion The Great Khali on WWE Main Event, General Manager Booker T ordered The Swiss Superman to join forces with World Heavyweight Champion Big Show to take on Randy Orton & Sheamus.

Despite obvious friction between Sheamus & Orton earlier in night, for a while, it seemed as if the explosive combination would work together without a hitch. After The Celtic Warrior avoided Big Show’s KO Punch and leveled The World’s Largest Athlete with the Brogue Kick, he tagged The Viper into the match to finish off their adversaries.

But as Orton looked ready to take down Cesaro, The Celtic Warrior tagged himself back into the ring, immediately causing noticeable discourse between the two former World Champions.

Second later, Sheamus hit White Noise on the United States Champion, setting up the inevitable Brogue Kick. But before he could hit it, Orton suddenly jumped into his path and hit Cesaro with the RKO. In doing so, he instantly snatched the thunder away from The Celtic Warrior, who was left to pick up the pin without hitting his signature maneuver.

If the match’s outcome shows one thing, it’s that as Superstars head down the road to the Royal Rumble Match, allies will be as dangerous as enemies.

Randy Orton returned; The Viper and Sheamus both enter the Royal Rumble Match; Booker T created a major SmackDown main event

RICHMOND, Va. — On the first SmackDown of 2013, Randy Orton returned to Friday night, immediately setting his sights on the Royal Rumble and the World Heavyweight Championship. After being teamed up with follow contender Sheamus, however, WWE’s Apex Predator and The Celtic Warrior showed why the upcoming pay-per-view will truly be every Superstar for himself.

(PHOTOS)
For the first time since getting injured at the hands of The Shield of the Dec. 14 edition of SmackDown, Randy Orton stepped back onto the blue brand — declaring his intention to enter the 2013 Royal Rumble Match on his quest to recapture the World Heavyweight Title.

A determined Sheamus soon interrupted, throwing his hat in the Royal Rumble Match as well. Though last year’s Rumble winner thanked Orton for joining him and Ryback in Monday’s Raw counter assault on Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, it wasn’t long before the two competitive Superstars were ready to butt heads.

Just as things started to get tense between them, World Heavyweight Champion Big Show casted his enormous shadow on the situation, stating that even if one of them did make it through the traditional Rumble free-for-all on Jan. 27, they would only get a KO Punch for their trouble, not the World Title. United States Champion Antonio Cesaro joined the increasingly volatile situation as well, unleashing his unique brand of insults in the direction of all three Superstars.

Before things descended into chaos, SmackDown General Manager Booker came forth, creating a main event showdown that would pit Big Show & Cesaro against Randy & Sheamus.

Randy Orton, Sheamus, and Ryback brawled with The Shield!

On new years Eve & The last episode of Raw of 2012, Randy Orton returned after recovering from his separated shoulder looking for revenge over the shield!

(VIDEO | PHOTOS)

Amid the chaos of Raw, the WWE Universe did get one bright spot as the year wound down to a close: The Shield got a taste of their own medicine. With WWE Champion CM Punk unable to defend his title for Champion’s Choice night, he instead convinced Managing Supervisor Vickie Guerrero into making a 3-on-1 Handicap Match between The Shield and Ryback. Unfortunately, the contest never even got started as the black-clad threesome swarmed their monstrous opponent before the opening bell could toll.

The trio jumped Ryback before he could make his way down the ramp, eventually trapping him in the ring and using the numbers to their advantage until Sheamus ran down to ringside. The Celtic Warrior’s bid for retribution against The Shield bore no fruit, though, as Ambrose, Rollins & Reigns continued their onslaught and kept the two strongmen down. With the odds of survival dwindling, Ryback and Sheamus needed a miracle. What they got was Randy Orton, recovered from his separated shoulder and looking for some payback of his own. The Viper, fresh and fuming, struck Ambrose with the RKO as Sheamus and Ryback expelled Rollins and Reigns from the ring, forcing The Shield into retreat for the first time. Might the trio’s weakness have been exposed?
